A New “Lock” Solution to Prevent Catheter-Related Infection and Thrombosis

In a multicenter, randomized trial, a solution containing citrate, methylene blue, and parabens was significantly more effective than the standard heparin solution.

Bloodstream infection and thrombosis are major complications in patients with long-term intravascular devices such as hemodialysis catheters. One approach to reducing these complications has been to “lock” the catheter, when not in use, with an antimicrobial solution, an antithrombotic solution, or both.

In a recent prospective, open-label trial conducted at 25 outpatient hemodialysis units in the U.S., researchers investigated the use of a new antithrombotic/antiseptic lock solution containing sodium citrate, methylene blue, and parabens (C-MB-P), with high activity against a variety of pathogens.
