More than 90 Streptococcus pneumoniae serotypes have been described. PCV7 — a vaccine that induces antibodies against the seven serotypes responsible for most episodes of invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) — was introduced into childhood vaccination schedules in the U.S. in 2000 and in the U.K. in 2006. Now, researchers have examined the effect of PCV7 on IPD incidence and serotype distribution in the U.K.
Between April 2008 and November 2009, nasopharyngeal swabs were obtained from children born since September 4, 2004, and their family members, all recruited from general practices in Hertfordshire and Gloucestershire.
