Herpes zoster (HZ), which is caused by reactivation of varicella zoster virus (VZV), is hypothesized to occur at an increased rate among individuals without reexposure to VZV after a childhood bout of chickenpox. This hypothesis has important implications regarding universal childhood VZV vaccination: If repeated exposures are protective against subsequent reactivation, then vaccination will result in an increased risk for HZ later in life. To explore this issue, researchers conducted a multicenter, observational study in France, where children do not routinely receive VZV vaccine. The study was funded by a vaccine manufacturer.
