In humans, listeriosis is usually acquired by consumption of contaminated food. Illness is mild in most people but can cause serious problems in pregnant women and is sometimes fatal in older or immunocompromised individuals. On September 2, 2011, the CDC was notified of seven cases of listeriosis that had occurred in Colorado since August 28, 2011. Investigation revealed that the seven patients had all consumed cantaloupe during the preceding month, and three of them had eaten “Rocky Ford” cantaloupes. On September 14, the grower — Jensen Farms, in Colorado — issued a voluntary recall of its melons.
