Group A streptococcal (GAS) infections range from impetigo and strep throat to severe disease (e.g., necrotizing fasciitis, streptococcal toxic shock syndrome). To characterize the disease burden caused by invasive GAS infections in France, investigators conducted a prospective nationwide survey between November 2006 and November 2007. The 194 participating hospitals accounted for 51% of acute care inpatient admissions in that country in 2007.
A total of 664 GAS infections met the case definition. In 70% of cases, GAS strains were isolated from the blood (only from the blood in 52%; also from other sites in 18%).
