Representation in leading medical journals is seen as an indicator of the importance of a medical field and may also identify strengths and weaknesses in the medical research profile of nations or regions. Researchers in Europe recently examined all original articles and brief reports published in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM), The Lancet, and the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) between 2003 and 2009 to determine the medical disciplines covered and the countries of origin.
