The European Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance System maintains the largest database of routinely collected antibiotic-susceptibility data for bacteremia isolates worldwide. Using data from this system, researchers examined the temporal dynamics of Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Enterococcus faecalis, and Enterococcus faecium isolates from bacteremia patients between 2002 and 2008.
During the study period, the total number of bacteremia episodes for all five pathogens increased by 47% (from 46,095 in 2002 to 67,876 in 2008; a 6% annual increase).
