Tigecycline is a glycylcycline antibiotic with a broad spectrum of antimicrobial activity that includes many multidrug-resistant pathogens. However, in September 2010, the FDA issued a drug safety warning for tigecycline because in phase III clinical trials, cure rates for serious hospital-acquired infections — particularly hospital-acquired pneumonia (HAP) — were lower among patients treated with the approved dose of tigecycline (100 mg intravenously, followed by 50 mg twice daily) than among those treated with other broad-spectrum agents such as imipenem-cilastatin (JW Infect Dis Sep 8 2010).
