With increasing use of vancomycin for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infections have come reports of MRSA isolates with vancomycin minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) >1 µg/mL — and of treatment failures at these elevated MICs.
To examine the situation, researchers (some with ties to the manufacturer of daptomycin) performed a retrospective, matched cohort study comparing outcomes of adults with MRSA bacteremia (MRSAB) who were treated with vancomycin or daptomycin at any of four Detroit hospitals between January 2005 and March 2012.
