Postmenopausal women without coronary heart disease (CHD) who were randomized to combination hormone replacement therapy (HRT; estrogen plus progestin) in the placebo-controlled Women's Health Initiative (WHI) showed increased risk for CHD. Consequently, the combination-HRT arm of the trial was halted (Journal Watch Cardiology Aug 23 2002). Now, investigators present the final WHI results (mean follow-up, 5.6 years) with updated analyses of previously reported endpoints, additional coronary endpoints, and some additional subgroup analyses.
