In view of recent advances in the frequency and safety of elective percutaneous coronary intervention, investigators at a single center in the Netherlands examined the feasibility and safety of same-day discharge after PCI with a femoral approach. Excluded from participation were patients undergoing ad hoc PCI after diagnostic catheterization, those requiring glycoprotein IIb/IIIa inhibitors or use of >6F guiding catheters, and those likely to experience procedural complications or difficult hemostasis postprocedure. During an enrollment period of almost 3 years, 32% of the center’s PCI procedures were elective, and about half of these qualified for inclusion in the study.
