Controversy continues about the optimal diet to lower the risk for cardiovascular disease. Now, researchers have analyzed data from 372 of 772 participants in a dietary trial in Spain who were randomized to consume either a low-fat diet, or a traditional Mediterranean diet augmented with either virgin olive oil or additional nuts. The traditional Mediterranean diet included use of olive oil for cooking and dressing; consumption of vegetables, nuts, and fish; substitution of white meat for red meat; preparation of homemade sauces using tomato, garlic, onion, and aromatic herbs; and optional moderate consumption of red wine.
