Stent placement in unprotected left main coronary artery (LMCA) lesions is feasible, but long-term results for comparison to surgery have not been available (Journal Watch Cardiology Apr 8 2005). Now, using a multicenter registry, investigators have examined long-term outcomes of drug-eluting stent (DES) implantation in a subset of patients with ostial or midshaft lesions that did not require a bifurcation approach.
A total of 147 patients (19% of all registry patients with LMCA lesions who underwent percutaneous coronary intervention) were treated with sirolimus-eluting (n=107) or paclitaxel-eluting (n=40) stents. The mean age of the 147 patients was 63 years. Intravascular ultrasound was used to guide the procedure in 49% of the patients. …
