Observational studies have shown a reduced rate of restenosis with drug-eluting stents (DES), compared with bare-metal stents (BMS), in unprotected left main coronary artery (LMCA) lesions (Journal Watch Cardiology Apr 8 2005). In a new study, investigators in Australia randomized 103 patients with LMCA disease to treatment with either a BMS or a paclitaxel-eluting stent (PES). All lesions were predilated with a cutting balloon, and stent placement was optimized with intravascular ultrasound (IVUS).
