Hospitalization for heart failure is known to be associated with an increased risk for death and nonfatal adverse events. However, the magnitude and timing of this association is not well characterized. To explore the issue, investigators studied the risk for and timing of death after hospitalization among participants in the manufacturer-sponsored CHARM trials, in which patients with symptomatic HF were randomized to receive candesartan or placebo (Journal Watch Cardiology Oct 10 2003).
