ILLUMINATE was a large, manufacturer-sponsored, outcomes trial of torcetrapib, an inhibitor of cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP) shown to increase HDL levels. In December 2006, the trial was halted early because of increased mortality in the study-drug arm. The long-awaited results of this study are now available.
Men and women (aged 45 to 75) at high risk for vascular events and treated with atorvastatin to achieve LDL targets of less than 100 mg/dL were randomized to receive torcetrapib (60 mg) or placebo. The primary outcome was time to a major cardiovascular event.
The trial, planned for an average patient follow-up time of 4.5 years, was terminated after a median patient follow-up time of 550 days. As reported in previous studies…
