Because of its established association with adverse outcomes, hyponatremia is considered an important marker of heart failure severity. These researchers investigated whether persistent hyponatremia during hospitalization predicts outcomes.
Using data from ESCAPE (Evaluation Study of Congestive Heart Failure and Pulmonary Artery Catheterization Effectiveness), the investigators studied the associations between outcomes and baseline hyponatremia and changes in serum sodium levels in 433 patients hospitalized with severely symptomatic HF and LV systolic dysfunction (LV ejection fraction, <30%).
