Recent reports of risk associated with drug-eluting stents (DES), particularly for off-label indications (Journal Watch Cardiology May 23 2007), have spurred the use of bare-metal stents (BMS). To characterize the risks of BMS in clinical practice, Mayo Clinic investigators retrospectively reviewed outcomes in 4503 consecutive patients who received BMS between 1994 and 2000.
Mean patient age was 65, and median follow-up was 7.9 years. Seventeen percent of patients received multivessel stents. The incidence of definite and probable stent thrombosis was 0.5% at 30 days, 0.8% at 1 year, and 2.0% at 10 years.
