More Safety Data on Thiazolidinediones

Rosiglitazone raises rates of heart failure, MI, and mortality in older diabetic patients, according to a large, retrospective study.

Evidence is mounting about the potential risks of thiazolidinediones (TZDs), particularly for diabetic patients with congestive heart failure (Journal Watch Cardiology Oct 10 2007). As a result, a black-box warning for CHF has been issued for this class of drugs. However, determining the risks of TZDs for real-world populations has been hindered by a lack of data beyond that from trials limited primarily to younger adults. Therefore, investigators assessed the association between CHF, MI, and mortality and the use of TZDs or other oral hypoglycemic agents in older diabetic patients.
