Recent guidelines have suggested that individuals with prehypertension, defined as a systolic blood pressure ranging from 120 to 139 mm Hg or a diastolic blood pressure ranging from 80 to 89 mm Hg, need targeted treatment to delay the onset of hypertension. To evaluate the development of hypertension and associated risk factors, investigators used data collected during periodic exams of 1717 individuals between the ages of 20 and 69 (54% women; mean age, 42) who were without diabetes and whose mothers and fathers were in the original cohort of the Framingham Heart Study.
