Bicuspid aortic valve is the most common congenital cardiac abnormality in adults, yet few contemporary data are available on outcomes in this patient population. Now, investigators in Canada have retrospectively assessed a cohort of 642 ambulatory patients with bicuspid aortic valves who were treated at a congenital cardiac disorders center from 1994 through 2001 and were followed for a mean of 9 years.
Mean patient age was 35, and 68% were male. The main outcome of interest was mortality, classified by cause of death. Primary cardiac events — defined as cardiac death, any interventional procedure involving the valve or aorta, aortic dissection or aneurysm, and congestive heart failure requiring hospitalization — were also examined.
