Current guidelines recommend documenting ischemia before elective percutaneous coronary intervention in patients with stable coronary artery disease. To determine the rate of stress testing before elective PCI, investigators retrospectively studied claims data from a random sample of 20% of Medicare fee-for-service beneficiaries who had elective PCI in 2004.
Overall, 44.5% of 23,887 eligible patients (60.3% male; 92.7% white) underwent stress testing within 90 days before elective PCI.
