Whether certain diets are associated with cardiovascular risk remains controversial. In this analysis from the INTERHEART study (conducted in 52 countries), 5761 patients with a first acute MI and 10,646 healthy control subjects completed dietary questionnaires and underwent clinical assessments. From the data, investigators identified three dietary patterns: Western (relatively high in meat, fried foods, and salty foods), Oriental (high in tofu and soy), and prudent (high in fruits and vegetables). They also created dietary risk scores for each participant, based on consumption of the 19 foods in the questionnaire.
