Depression predicts adverse cardiovascular outcomes in patients with coronary artery disease. Investigators for the Heart and Soul Study, a prospective cohort study of 1017 outpatients with stable CAD, explored possible mechanisms of this association by examining an array of biological and behavioral covariates. Proportional-hazard models were used to evaluate the association of depressive symptoms, as measured by the Patient Health Questionnaire, with subsequent cardiovascular events.
