Congestive heart failure is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in the U.S. To evaluate the incidence of heart failure in different ethnic groups, U.S. investigators for the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis examined 6814 individuals of four distinct ethnicities — white (38.5%), black (27.8%), Latino (21.9%), and Chinese (11.8%) — and followed them for a median of 4 years. None of the participants had clinical cardiovascular disease at baseline.
