Few data are available on the association of LV function with exercise capacity. Some study findings have suggested that diastolic dysfunction is related to poor exercise capacity, particularly in older individuals. In this cross-sectional study from the Mayo Clinic, investigators enrolled 2867 patients undergoing exercise testing and assessed clinical and echocardiographic correlates of exercise capacity as measured in METs.
Routine echocardiographic measures of systolic and diastolic function obtained before and after exercise revealed that diastolic dysfunction correlated inversely with exercise capacity.
