Prevention of atrial fibrillation, the most common arrhythmia worldwide, would profoundly affect morbidity and mortality in at-risk individuals. Previous study findings suggest that drugs that block the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system inhibit atrial remodeling. To explore whether an angiotensin-receptor blocker might prevent AF recurrence, investigators for this large, manufacturer-funded trial randomized 1442 patients with two or more episodes of AF within the previous 6 months (about 40% of participants) or a cardioversion for AF within the previous 2 weeks (nearly 90% of participants) to receive valsartan or placebo.
