High blood glucose levels on hospital admission are associated with decreased survival after acute MI. To find out whether normalization of blood glucose after admission affects mortality, investigators used two metrics — admission and mean postadmission glucose levels — to study 7820 hyperglycemic patients hospitalized for acute MI between January 1, 2000, and December 31, 2005.
Heart failure and diabetes were more prevalent in patients with higher postadmission glucose levels than in those with lower postadmission glucose levels. Lower postadmission glucose levels were associated with lower mortality; this association persisted after multivariate adjustment (see table).
