Elevated blood glucose level is a well-known independent predictor of poor outcome in patients hospitalized with MI. Whether it has prognostic implications for other cardiovascular illnesses is unclear.
Investigators analyzed National Heart Care Project data on 50,532 patients aged ≥65 who were admitted to the hospital with heart failure during two 1-year periods (April 1998–March 1999 and July 2000–June 2001). The median admission glucose level was 130 mg/dL, and 42% of patients had recognized diabetes. Of patients with glucose levels >140 mg/dL, 35% did not have recognized diabetes at the time of admission.
