To assess U.S. trends in cardiovascular disease control, researchers analyzed data on adults aged 40 to 85 from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), an ongoing study of health and disease in nationally representative population samples. From 1999 through 2006, the prevalences of hypertension, coronary heart disease, and stroke remained stable, but the prevalence of diabetes rose from 11.8% to 13.7%. Nonetheless, analyses adjusted for age and sex revealed significant improvements in control of blood pressure, glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels, and total cholesterol levels.
