Cardiac rehabilitation (CR) decreases cardiac and overall mortality after acute cardiac events. It also presents a unique opportunity to improve health status, since most CR patients are overweight and have metabolic syndrome. These investigators conducted a randomized, controlled trial of high-calorie-expenditure CR in 74 patients with body-mass indexes >27 kg/m2. Compared with standard CR, the high-calorie-expenditure program contained workouts that were longer in duration (45–60 vs. 25–40 minutes/session), lower in intensity, and more frequent (5–7 vs. 3 times/week). All patients received weight-loss counseling and took evidence-based preventive medications.
