Many tout low-carbohydrate, high-protein diets for reducing weight, but most of these diets have no (or adverse) effects on LDL levels, probably because of the high proportions of animal-based fats they contain. These investigators compared the effects on weight loss and lipid measures of a low-carbohydrate vegetarian diet high in proteins from gluten, soy, nuts, fruits, vegetables, cereals, and vegetable oils and of a high-carbohydrate vegetarian diet based on low-fat dairy products and whole grains. Two of the authors were employed by Solae, LLC, a promoter and developer of soy-based foods that supported the study.
