Physical inactivity is a well-known contributor to cardiovascular risk, and watching television is the most common sedentary behavior in many developed countries. However, whether television viewing time is independently associated with mortality is unclear. To explore such an association, investigators in Australia assessed the lifestyle habits of a population-based sample of 8800 adults (44% men) aged 25 and older. Participants underwent interviews and testing for oral glucose tolerance and cholesterol and blood sugar levels. Enrollment took place from 1999 through 2000, and follow-up ended in November 2006.
