Psychosocial factors are known to influence outcomes in patients with cardiovascular disease, but studies of interventions to improve outcomes by addressing these factors have generated mixed results (JW Cardiol Oct 6 2010). In this randomized trial, investigators studied the effects of an intensive cognitive-behavioral intervention in 362 patients (mean age, 61.5 years; 23% women) after hospitalization for acute myocardial infarction, percutaneous coronary intervention, or coronary artery bypass grafting in Sweden between 1996 and 2002. The intervention consisted of 20 structured 2-hour sessions over 1 year in small, single-sex groups focusing on education, self care, skills development, cognitive restructuring, and spiritual development.
