Two types of bariatric surgery are currently performed: gastric bypass (GB) and duodenal switch (DS). In observational studies, weight loss was greater after DS than after GB. To compare weight loss and improvements in cardiovascular risk factors and quality of life after the two procedures, investigators conducted an unblinded, prospective, randomized clinical trial in 60 patients in Scandinavia.
Two years after surgery, the mean reduction in body-mass index was 17.3 kg/m2 after GB and 24.8 kg/m2 after DS (P<0.001). Waist circumference, hip circumference, and sagittal diameter were significantly reduced after both procedures.
