To investigate possible sex differences in the use and outcomes of implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs), researchers studied prospective data on 6021 patients evaluated for ICD placement at 18 centers in Ontario. Of 5450 patients who received ICDs between February 2007 and July 2010, 1155 (21.2%) were women. Implantation rates in women and men did not differ significantly, and reasons for nonimplantation were distributed similarly in both sexes. Compared with men, women did not have a significantly lower relative risk for ICD placement for any indication after adjustment for baseline characteristics and comorbidities.
