In the manufacturer-funded PARTNER trial, transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) was found to be noninferior to surgical aortic valve replacement at 1 year; symptom improvement was also similar with the two approaches (JW Cardiol June 8 2011). We now have the 2-year results from this randomized trial, which involved 669 high-risk patients with severe aortic stenosis (mean age, 84) in the U.S. who were candidates for surgery.
The two groups had similar cumulative all-cause mortality at 2 years (TAVR, 33.9%; surgery, 35.0%).
