Previous research has demonstrated adverse effects of various kinds of psychosocial stress on incident cardiovascular disease (JW Cardiol Sep 19 2012). To find out whether chronic stress is an independent marker of poor prognosis after a coronary event, investigators studied outcomes in 4204 patients discharged alive after acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Baseline stress levels were measured by the perceived stress scale during the index admission, and health status was measured by several validated patient-response instruments at 1 year.
