Background and Purpose: ST-segment-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), although declining in incidence, remains an important public health concern, accounting for about one third of the more than 650,000 annual hospital admissions for MI in the U.S. In-hospital and 1-year mortality rates are approximately 5%–6% and 7%–18%, respectively.
