Vasculitis has been associated with solid-organ and hematologic neoplasia. Some patients have been reported to have had paraneoplastic disease. These authors retrospectively studied the occurrence of malignancy in patients with vasculitis seen at the Cleveland Clinic between January 1980 and July 1998. During this period, 2869 patients had vasculitis and more than 69,000 patients had a malignancy.
The authors identified 69 patients who had had both vasculitis and cancer, but only 12 had had the two conditions within the same 12-month period. Six of the 12 had solid tumors, 4 had lymphoma, 1 had leukemia, and 1 had myeloma. Seven of the 12 had leukocytoclastic vasculitis (LCV), and 4 of these 7 had solid tumors.
