Chemical lipolysis is promoted, with very little supporting scientific evidence, as an effective treatment for unwanted fat. In this double-blind, randomized study from Italy, investigators compared two lipolysis treatments administered to 40 consecutive female patients with bilateral, outer-thigh fat deposits. One thigh received a combination of 1000 mg of phosphatidylcholine and 500 mg of sodium deoxycholate (Lipostabil), and the other, 475 mg of sodium deoxycholate (DEOX). In four treatments 8 weeks apart, patients received 80 injections per thigh, spaced 1 cm apart, to a depth of 10 mm. A final evaluation was made 8 weeks after the last treatment.
