Plantar warts are notoriously treatment resistant. Investigators tested the efficacy of a single dose of interferon alfa-2a (IFN-α2a) for this difficult condition.
The investigators enrolled 53 patients (age range, 14–50) with one or more verruca of at least 4 months’ duration on the soles or palmar surfaces of the fingers. Many of the warts had failed to respond to such standard treatments as cryotherapy, excision, electrodessication, and topical 5-fluorouracil cream. Of 32 patients with single plantaris lesions, 8 served as unrandomized controls. Another 21 patients had multiple warts, palmar in 9 and plantar in 12.
