Psoriasis links to the PSORS1 gene within the major histocompatibility complex, at or near the C locus (HLA-C). Two new genome-wide scans conducted by Nair and colleagues and Zhang and colleagues confirm this association (P=4×10-53 and P=1.9×10-208, respectively). Studies by these investigators and by de Cid and colleagues have also identified other genes strongly linked to psoriasis. The LCE gene cluster lies on chromosome 1q21 in an area called the epidermal differentiation complex because it contains at least 20 genes expressed during epithelial differentiation.
