Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic inflammatory disorder of unknown etiology that affects the intertriginous surfaces, including the axilla, inframammary region, inguinal skin, and buttocks. Women are affected about twice as often as men, and heavy tobacco smokers are at particularly high risk. Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) has been reported as a complication of long-standing HS.
These authors report 13 new cases of HS-associated SCC (10 of 217 HS patients seen in their center and another 3 from other centers). All 13 patients were men (mean age, 53), and all had SCC in the anogenital area. Ten were heavy smokers (>30 pack-year history).
