Leiomyosarcomas (LMSs) frequently originate in the uterus and soft tissues. Cutaneous origin is rare, and little is known about the behavior and histologic features of these malignant smooth-muscle tumors that are essentially confined to the dermis, with minimal if any extension into the underlying fat.
The authors of this retrospective analysis examined 36 cutaneous LMSs seen at 10 European centers. The patients were predominantly male, with a median age of 69 years. In order of frequency, the lesions occurred on the head and neck, lower extremities, upper extremities, nipple, and penis.
