How often patients present to the ED with skin diseases has not been elucidated until now. These authors used a Canadian database to identify skin-related ED visits and their disposition over 5 years. Skin disease accounted for 3.3% of visits, with seasonal variation. The most frequent diagnosis was cutaneous infection. Most patients were discharged — only 4% were admitted, primarily for presumed cellulitis, a diagnosis that the authors note may not have been valid in many patients. They could not identify the percentage of visits in which a dermatologist was called. Of the skin-related visits, 75% were deemed non-urgent or semi-urgent; only 2% were truly emergent.
