Many children with atopic dermatitis (AD) outgrow it, experiencing relative or complete remission. The ability to predict which patients will continue to have problems with eczema in adolescence might be useful.
Investigators assessed the value of 12 variables for predicting persistence and recurrence of AD. They conducted a follow-up analysis of 2857 German adolescents who had participated in a study of allergy and asthma prevalence in fourth grade: 424 with and 2433 without AD at baseline. Parental questionnaire responses, skin prick tests, serum IgE levels, and pulmonary function tests provided the baseline data. Participants were recontacted at age 16 to 20 years and responded to a questionnaire.
