The newly identified entity adult-onset atopic dermatitis (AOAD) differs somewhat from classical atopic dermatitis (AD) in its location on the face, hands, and nonflexural areas and its manifestation as prurigo-like dermatitis. No clear risk factors have yet been defined. Because gestational and perinatal exposure to tobacco smoking has been suggested as a link to development of classical AD, investigators from Taiwan performed a case-control study to determine whether such a link exists in the development of AOAD.
