The influence of BRAF or NRAS mutations in melanoma has become a crucial determinant in treatment decisions in the era of targeted therapies. Are tumors associated with these mutations clinicopathologically or biologically distinct? A recent meta-analysis of studies examining this issue produced some interesting conclusions.
In 36 studies of BRAF mutations and melanoma, BRAF mutations were detected in 1028 (41%) of 2521 patients. BRAF mutations were reported in 492 (49%) of 999 superficial spreading melanomas (SSMs); 116 (41%) of 282 nodular melanomas (NMs); 42 (22%) of 195 lentigo maligna melanomas (LMs); and 25 (20%) of 123 acral lentiginous melanomas (ALMs).
