Persistent melanocytic lesions can present worrisome clinical and pathologic features. Consideration of the clinical history and comparison of the recurrent lesion with the original biopsy are paramount in reaching a correct diagnosis. Investigators analyzed how the type of initial biopsy and characteristics of the pigmented lesion relate to persistence in 185 patients. They studied 205 persistent nevi, 52% of which had original biopsy samples available for review. The researchers compared anatomic location, lesion size, biopsy method, margins, and interval to recurrence of these nevi with 232 nonpersistent/nonrecurrent nevi.
